A simple silt test you can do at site

Too much silt (mud) in sand weakens plaster and concrete and causes cracks. To check: fill a clear glass bottle about halfway with sand, add water until it is three-quarters full, add a pinch of salt, shake well and leave it for a few hours. The silt settles as a separate layer on top of the sand. A thin layer is fine; a thick layer of mud means the sand needs washing or should be rejected.
